Block-printed, then embroidered by hand
The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every line the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.
The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the pattern meets correctly at the edges, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.
A drawn jaal, not a filled one
Jaal means the embroidery covers the whole field rather than sitting in a border, and there are two ways to do it. Most of our jaal pieces are worked heavy — dense thread that fills the motif and sits on top of the ground. This one is drawn instead: the paisleys are outlined in a fine line barely darker than the cloth, with colour used sparingly inside them, a few stitches to a flowerhead.
That restraint is deliberate and it is harder, not easier. A heavy fill hides an unsteady line; a drawn outline is the line, and any wobble in a paisley's curve shows across the whole shawl. The result is a piece that reads almost plain from a distance and then opens up completely once you are near it — the paisleys appear, then the small teal and rose flowers inside them. It is full embroidery for someone who does not want to look embroidered.
The paisleys are largest and most worked at the two ends, growing smaller and more scattered through the middle of the field, and the whole thing is framed by a narrow band of triangles filled with tiny leaf sprigs.
The colour
Olive brown is the quietest ground we work on — a warm drab that shifts towards khaki in daylight and towards brown indoors. It is the easiest colour in the range to wear with what you already own, and the one that looks least like it is trying.
The cloth carries a fine self-coloured herringbone through the ground, visible when the light crosses it, which gives the embroidery something to sit against without competing with it.
