An Everyday Kani shawl in khaki, handwoven in Kashmir with the pattern built into the cloth on the loom rather than embroidered onto it afterwards. This is our entry point to Kani weaving — the same technique as our Kani pashmina shawls, on a lighter, less fine base — and it is priced accordingly.
What Kani means
Kani is one of Kashmir's traditional shawl techniques. The weaver works with small wooden bobbins, called kanis, each wound with a different colour, and builds the design into the cloth following a written pattern. Nothing is printed and nothing is stitched on; the motif is the cloth. Read how Kani differs from sozni embroidery.
Why we call it Everyday
Our Kani pashmina shawls are woven on a finer pashmina base. The Everyday Kani uses the same weaving on a lighter, more affordable base cloth, which makes it the right choice if you want the look of Kani for daily winter wear, or as a first Kani, without the cost of the finer piece. If you are choosing between the two, the difference is in the hand: the pashmina is softer and finer against the skin, the Everyday Kani is sturdier.
The colour
Khaki is the quiet one of the three. A muted, earthy ground lets the coloured Kani pattern sit softly instead of shouting, which makes this the piece for daytime wear, for the office, and for anyone who wants Kani without a wedding colour.
Details
Handwoven cloth varies slightly from piece to piece; small irregularities are the signature of hand work, not a fault. Colours may differ slightly from the photographs depending on your screen.

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
