Block-printed, then embroidered by hand
The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every line the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.
The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.
Geometry, where our other olive brown is floral
We carry olive brown in two embroideries and they are opposites. The other one is a jaal — curling paisleys and trailing vine drawn across the entire field, so the whole cloth is worked. This one leaves the field almost completely open and puts everything into the edge.
The border here is jali work: a grid of diamonds, each cell holding a small four-pointed star, with pointed leaf-shaped eyes set along the rows and a scalloped line closing it on the inside. Geometry is the harder thing to embroider by hand. A vine forgives a wandering stitch because no two leaves are meant to match; a diamond grid does not — every cell has to be the same size and every row square across the full width, and the eye catches any cell that drifts.
The corner paisley is the one piece of free drawing in the whole design, lifted out onto the plain field where it has room to be seen. Between the two olive browns, the jaal is the one that reads as pattern from across a room; this one reads as a plain shawl until you are close enough to see the grid, then resolves into a great deal of work.
The colour
Olive brown is the quietest ground we work on — a warm drab that shifts towards khaki in daylight and towards brown indoors. It is the easiest colour in the range to wear with what you already own, and the one that looks least like it is trying.
The thread stays soft and faded rather than bright, so the band sits into the cloth instead of on top of it. The ground itself carries a fine self-coloured diamond weave, visible when the light crosses it — the same geometry as the border, one woven in and one stitched on.

Each shawl is embroidered by hand, so slight variation between pieces is expected and is the mark of hand work rather than a fault.
