Block-printed, then embroidered by hand
The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.
The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.
Not the same border as our slate grey
We carry grey in two embroideries and they are easy to tell apart once you know what to look for. The slate grey is deliberately restrained — a narrow line of vine at the edge and a small paisley tucked into each corner, the field left completely open.
This one is a step up in scale. The border is a proper band rather than a line: a continuous trailing vine set between two fine rails, scalloped along the inside and finished on the outside with a row of small upright flowerheads. The corner paisley is no longer tucked away either — it sits out on the open field, drawn large, with its own spray of blossom growing out of it.
The colour handling is also different. Our borders on dark grounds are worked in gold so they lift off the cloth. Here everything is kept close in tone to the ground — dusty teal, faded rose, citron — so the band settles into the cloth instead of sitting on top of it. From a few feet away it reads as a soft antique stripe; up close it separates into individual leaves and flowers. It is the more interesting choice and the quieter one at the same time.
The colour
This is a true neutral grey — no blue cast, no warm cast — which makes it the most straightforward colour we sell to put with what you already own. It works against black, navy, denim, cream, camel and brown alike, and the muted thread in the border means it stays a neutral rather than becoming a statement.
The cloth carries a fine self-coloured herringbone through the ground, visible when the light crosses it.

Each shawl is embroidered by hand, so slight variation between pieces is expected and is the mark of hand work rather than a fault.
