Swati Shahtoosh Shawl — Forest Green, Hand Embroidered

A Swati Shahtoosh shawl in deep forest green, handwoven with a fine self-coloured lattice through the ground, then hand embroidered with a narrow flowering border running all four sides and a paisley buta set into each corner, worked in rose, gold, coral and cream.

Block-printed, then embroidered by hand

The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.

The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.

Green is the hardest ground to place thread on, because it is the one colour that sits in the middle — neither warm nor cool — so a thread can easily end up neither contrasting nor harmonising. The answer taken here is rose and coral: the colours directly opposite green, which is why the border glows against it rather than sitting on it. It is the boldest colour decision of the set and the one that pays off most.

Forest green is also the shade that reads as neither formal nor casual — dark enough for an evening, quiet enough for a working day, and one of the few colours that looks equally right on a man or a woman. It sits particularly well against camel, cream and brown.
