A Swati Shahtoosh shawl in deep maroon, handwoven with a fine self-coloured lattice through the ground, then hand embroidered with a narrow flowering border running all four sides and a paisley buta set into each corner, worked in gold, rust, rose and slate.

Block-printed, then embroidered by hand

The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.

The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.

Maroon is the one colour in this range where the embroidery has to be gold. Teal or green would sink into a ground this deep and this warm; the gold sits a full step brighter than the cloth and holds the line clean. It is a narrow decision and it is the difference between a border you can read across a room and one you cannot.

This is the occasion shawl of the three. Deep maroon with gold is the wedding-season pairing in Pakistan, and the colour holds its depth under evening light rather than going flat the way brighter reds do. Formal enough for a mehndi or a nikkah, dark enough that a man would wear it too.
