Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl — Taupe & Rosewood

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a soft taupe ground, handwoven with rosewood and deep brown flowering sprays across the field, framed on all four sides by a scalloped border of paisley and blossom, and closed at each end with a colonnade of rosewood and charcoal stripes.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

This is the same design as our Sand & Rose piece, worked in a darker register — and the difference is worth understanding. On the pale version the flowers float; here, against taupe with charcoal in the drawing, the same motifs sit down into the cloth and read as depth rather than decoration. It is the quieter and more masculine of the two, and the one that holds up better under artificial light.

Taupe with rosewood is also the most forgiving combination in the collection. It works against black, brown, olive and cream alike, which makes it a rare thing in Kani: a piece you can wear without planning the rest of the outfit around it.
