Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl - Stone & Navy

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a stone-grey ground, handwoven with fine navy paisley repeating across the whole field and a deep ornamented border at each end.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

Two colours only, worked at a very fine scale — which is harder than it sounds, because there is no third tone to soften a misplaced thread. The result is closer to ink on paper than to the multi-colour Kani most people picture, and it reads as restrained rather than ceremonial. This is the piece for someone who wants the craft without the colour, and the one in the collection that a man would wear.
