Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl — Sea Green Check

Rs.18,000.00

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl with a sea green checked field, finished at each end with a deep ivory border of dense floral Kani weave and a plain cream panel beyond it.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

The construction here is unusual and worth understanding. Rather than carrying pattern across the whole shawl, the weaver has kept the field to a quiet green check and concentrated all the Kani work into the two end borders — where it sits against ivory rather than green, so the flowers read at full strength. It is the same decision a tailor makes putting detail only at a cuff: the restraint is what makes the worked part land. Practically, it also means this shawl reads as plain when folded over a shoulder and reveals the craft when it falls open.

Details

  • Pure Kashmiri pashmina
  • Kani handwoven on the loom, not embroidered or printed
  • Checked field with deep floral Kani borders at both ends
  • Approx. 40" × 80"
  • Dry clean only
  • Handwoven in Kashmir

Each shawl is one of a kind. Slight irregularity in the weave is inherent to handloom work and is the mark of an authentic Kani piece.
