About this piece
A Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a pale sand ground, handwoven with rose and ochre flowering sprays across the field, framed on all four sides by a deep scalloped border of paisley and blossom, and closed at each end with a colonnade of rose and gold stripes.
Kani is one of Kashmir's traditional shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis, following a coded pattern script. It is slow, careful loom work, and no two pieces come out the same.
Three colours and no more — rose, ochre and the sand of the ground itself. With so few tones the design has to hold on drawing alone, so the flowers are given room to breathe and the border does the heavy work. The effect is closer to an old fresco than to a shawl.
Practically, this is the piece for someone who wants Kani without the colour — it sits under cream, camel, white and every neutral without competing, and it is one of the most daytime-wearable shawls in the collection.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
