Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl — Plum & Moss Lattice

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl worked in plum and moss green, handwoven with a lattice of ogee medallions covering the entire field, framed by a floral border and a row of small paisley cartouches, and closed with an arcade of striped columns at each end.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

Everything on this shawl is geometry before it is flowers. The field is a strict ogee lattice — pointed ovals interlocking edge to edge — and each one is filled with its own symmetrical arrangement of blossoms. Then the borders repeat the discipline at three different scales: a wide floral band, a row of small framed paisleys, and finally the columns. Four systems of pattern, each contained inside its own rule, all resolving at the same corner.

That structure is why the piece reads as architectural rather than decorative, and why the muted plum and moss suit it — strong colour would turn it busy. It is the most formal shawl in the collection and one of the few a man would wear without hesitation.
