About this piece
A Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl in moss green and ochre, handwoven with a dense field of small flowering vines, a narrow scrolling border down both long sides, and a bold arched panel of stylised blossoms at each end.
Kani is one of Kashmir's traditional shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis, following a coded pattern script. It is slow, careful loom work, and no two pieces come out the same.
The two halves of this shawl are drawn at completely different scales, and that is the whole design. The field is worked in some of the smallest motifs in the collection — leaves and buds repeating without pause. Then the end panel abandons all of it for large flat blocks of teal and gold. Setting fine work directly against bold is a confident design, and it is why this piece looks entirely different folded over an arm than it does hanging full length.
Moss and ochre together are unusual and completely of the landscape — the colours of Swat and Kashmir in late autumn. It is a quiet shawl for daylight, and it suits a man as readily as a woman.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
