Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl — Antique Gold

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on an antique gold ground, handwoven with fine rose and olive flowering vines across the full field, a narrow running border down both long edges and a deep arched panel at each end.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

The colours here sit close together rather than in contrast — rose and olive on gold, all within a half-step of each other. That is the harder thing to weave well: with no strong contrast to carry the design, the pattern has to hold together on drawing alone, and any unevenness in the motifs shows immediately. The effect is a shawl that looks like an antique from across a room and only reveals how much work is in it up close.
