A Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a soft stone-beige ground, woven all over with curling vines of feathery olive leaves that open into clusters of saffron star flowers, each with a tiny grey heart. Small seven-pointed stars and leaf-shaped buds are scattered between the stems. A fine border of small flowers and paisleys in olive, saffron and charcoal frames the field, with a row of little arched buta at each end, and the ends are left as a wide band of plain pashmina with a soft fringe.
The design
The layout is a generous all-over vine: bold enough to read clearly from across a room, but kept to just two colours on a neutral ground, so it feels calm rather than busy. The plain ends give the eye somewhere to rest and let the softness of the pashmina show.
How it is made
The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into Kashmiri pashmina, colour by colour, using the Kani technique. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes visible behind every flower. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.
The colour
Stone with saffron and olive is warm, earthy and easy to wear every day. It sits beautifully over black, brown, olive, ivory, camel or mustard, and suits anyone who prefers a neutral shawl with a quiet glow of colour.

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Pashmina, Kani-woven. The pattern is woven on the loom with small wooden bobbins called kanis, one colour at a time, by weavers in Kashmir. It is not printed and not embroidered; turn the shawl over and you will see the pattern worked through the cloth.
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
