A Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a rich crimson ground, covered all over in a garden of slender vines, small blossoms and dark leaves woven in black, oxblood and soft blush. Scattered through the vine are large open roses with rose-pink hearts and dark ruffled petals. A border of curling vines and small flowers, edged with a fine diamond chain and a houndstooth stripe, frames the field, and the ends are left as a wide band of plain crimson pashmina with a soft dark fringe.
The design
This is a dense all-over garden jaal in close tones: from a distance it reads as a warm, textured red, and up close it opens into hundreds of tiny leaves and flowers with the big roses floating among them. The plain crimson ends let the colour itself shine.
How it is made
The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into Kashmiri pashmina, colour by colour, using the Kani technique. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, a pale lacy mirror of the pattern with the thread changes showing behind every flower. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.
The colour
Crimson with black is a classic winter red: warm, festive and grown-up. It is perfect for a winter wedding or dinner, and sits beautifully over black, ivory, grey, gold or deep green.

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Pashmina, Kani-woven. The pattern is woven on the loom with small wooden bobbins called kanis, one colour at a time, by weavers in Kashmir. It is not printed and not embroidered; turn the shawl over and you will see the pattern worked through the cloth.
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
