Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Border Shawl — Mustard

A Kashmiri pashmina shawl on a deep mustard ground, patterned with rows of small cream buta across the field and framed on all four sides by a broad Kani-woven paisley border, finished with a rust panel at each end.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques — the pattern is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, on small wooden bobbins called kanis, at a rate of an inch or two a day. On a fully worked Kani shawl that work runs across the entire cloth, and the price reflects it.

This is the border version, and we would rather say so plainly. The dense Kani work is concentrated in the wide frame; the field carries a simpler repeating buta. It is the same technique and the same hands, applied where it shows most — which is why this piece sits at a third of the price of our full Kani shawls rather than alongside them.

Practically, it is the easier shawl to wear. Draped over a shoulder the border falls where the eye lands, and the quieter field keeps the whole thing from competing with what you have on underneath. Mustard with a rust end is a warm, everyday combination rather than a wedding one.
