Two crafts, one shawl
Kani is the weaving: the pattern built into the cloth colour by colour with small wooden bobbins, following a written talim, a few centimetres a day. Sozni is the embroidery: fine, flat hand-stitching that sits on the surface of the pashmina. Most shawls are one or the other. Here the embroiderer has worked over the Kani weave, adding detail and relief the loom alone cannot give, and the piece has passed through two sets of skilled hands before reaching you. Each Kani is woven once; when this piece sells it will not be repeated. Handwoven cloth varies slightly and small irregularities in the weave and stitching are the signature of hand work, not a fault. Colours may differ slightly from the photographs depending on your screen.
