About this piece

A fine pashmina Kani shawl finished with hand-embroidery: two of Kashmir's crafts on one cloth, the pattern first woven in on the loom and then worked over by hand with the needle. Among the finest pieces we carry.

Two crafts, one shawl

Kani is the weaving: the pattern built into the cloth colour by colour with small wooden bobbins, following a written talim. Sozni is the embroidery: fine, flat hand-stitching that sits on the surface of the pashmina. Most shawls are one or the other. Here the embroiderer has worked over the Kani weave, adding detail and relief the loom alone cannot give, and the piece has passed through two sets of skilled hands before reaching you. Each Kani is one of a kind. Handwoven cloth varies slightly and small irregularities in the weave and stitching are the signature of hand work, not a fault. Colours may differ slightly from the photographs depending on your screen.

Size & how to wear

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.

Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin

Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Care

Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Keep perfume and hand cream away from the embroidered areas.

10-day exchange. If the colour is not what you hoped, message us within 10 days of delivery and exchange it for another piece, in the condition it arrived, unworn and unwashed. If a piece arrives damaged or is not what you ordered, we refund or replace it in full. Full exchange and refund policy.
