About this piece
A fine Kashmiri pashmina ring shawl (Palladar) in warm khaki, its field woven with a tone-on-tone lattice of medallions, and finished at each end with a palla of five large open paisleys in copper, cream and deep brown.
The name comes from the test. A Palladar is a shawl fine enough to be drawn whole through a finger ring — the traditional proof of fine Kashmiri pashmina. Yarn this fine breaks if the loom is pushed, so the weaving is slow and careful, and there is no shortcut to a cloth that passes. The ring is simply the proof.
The pallas
Each end carries a row of tall paisleys drawn in outline — their edges built from small woven flowers, their centres filled with fine floral sprigs — set on a soft ground of scattered blossoms and framed by a running chain of little paisleys. The two ends are not identical: one is worked in lighter copper and cream, the other in deeper brown with touches of slate blue, so the shawl looks slightly different depending on which end you bring forward.
The field, by contrast, is almost plain. A lattice of medallions is woven in the same khaki as the ground and only shows when light crosses it, which keeps the shawl quiet over the shoulders and lets the ends do the talking.
The colour
Warm khaki sits between taupe and light brown, with a soft natural sheen from the pashmina. It is one of the easiest neutrals to wear — over camel, cream, olive, brown or black — and the copper in the pallas warms it without making it loud.
Details
- Ultra-fine Kashmiri pashmina
- Warm khaki field with a self-coloured woven medallion lattice
- Woven pallas at both ends: a row of large open paisleys in copper, cream and brown within a paisley-chain border, the two ends in slightly different colourings
- Plain khaki end strip with fringe
- Passes through a finger ring
- Approx. 40" × 80"
- Dry clean only — store folded and away from direct light
- Handwoven in Kashmir
Handwoven cloth varies very slightly along its length; any faint unevenness you can see against the light is the mark of the handloom, not a fault.
Ships in Attan's branded box with a thank-you card, ready to gift.
Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
