About this piece
A fine Kashmiri pashmina ring shawl (Palladar) in charcoal grey, its field woven with rows of black paisley medallions on a scatter of tiny flowers, and finished at both ends with a deep pallu of large paisleys in rust, copper, sage and rose.
The name comes from the test. A Palladar is a shawl fine enough to be drawn whole through a finger ring — the traditional proof of fine Kashmiri pashmina. Yarn this fine breaks if the loom is pushed, so the weaving is slow and careful, and there is no shortcut to a cloth that passes. The ring is simply the proof.
Two shawls in one
The field and the ends are deliberately opposite. Across the body, the pattern is quiet and dark — paisley medallions in a neat lattice, black on charcoal, with small trailing flowers filling every gap between them. It reads almost plain from a distance and only resolves into pattern up close.
Then the pallas take over. Each end carries a broad band of interlocking paisleys and flowering vines in warm rust and copper, shaded with sage, dusty rose and old gold, framed by a narrow running border. The colour is all woven in, not printed or stitched on, so the pattern is the same from both sides. Worn draped, the dark field sits over the shoulders and the rust ends fall to the front, which is exactly what they are designed to do.
The colour
Charcoal is the easiest dark neutral in the range — softer than black, with a faint warmth that suits the rust ends. It goes over black, grey, camel and white equally well, and lets the pallas carry the outfit.
Details
- Ultra-fine Kashmiri pashmina
- Charcoal field with a woven black paisley-medallion lattice and small floral ground

- Passes through a finger ring
- Approx. 40" × 80"
- Dry clean only — store folded and away from direct light
- Handwoven in Kashmir
Handwoven cloth varies very slightly along its length; any faint unevenness you can see against the light is the mark of the handloom, not a fault.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
