About this piece

A fine Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a soft taupe ground, covered edge to edge in a garden of winding blue vines, open flowers, little paisleys and clusters of grapes, woven in crimson, saffron, marigold, magenta, cobalt and olive. A rose-and-saffron paisley border frames the field, with a fine leaf edging along the long sides, and each end steps down through a row of small zigzag motifs into bold stripes of red, blue, orange, yellow, magenta and olive, finishing in a soft fringe.

The design

This is an all-over garden jaal, one of the most joyful Kashmiri layouts: no empty ground, just a dense, flowing tangle of stems and blossoms that seems to grow across the cloth. The taupe base keeps the bright colours from shouting, so the shawl reads as rich and warm rather than loud, and the striped ends give it a lively finish.

How it is made

The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into fine Kashmiri pashmina, colour by colour, using the Kani technique. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes visible behind every flower. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.

The colour

Taupe with a full garden of jewel colours is one of the easiest bright shawls to wear: it picks up almost any outfit colour and sits well over black, ivory, grey, navy, maroon or mustard. Cheerful for a mehndi or a winter wedding, and easy enough for everyday.

Details

  • Fine Kashmiri pashmina
  • Kani pattern woven into the cloth, not printed or embroidered
  • Taupe field with an all-over garden jaal of vines, flowers, paisleys and grape clusters
  • Rose and saffron paisley border with a fine leaf edging along both sides
  • Zigzag band and multicoloured striped ends with a soft fringe
  • Approximately 45" × 85"
  • Dry clean only by a specialist. Keep away from rings, brooches and rough jewellery, which can catch the threads on the reverse
  • Store folded, away from direct sunlight

One piece only. Slight irregularity in the weave is natural to woven work of this kind, not a fault.

Ships in Attan's branded box with a thank-you card, ready to gift.

Size & how to wear

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.

Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.

Material & origin

Pashmina, Kani-woven. The pattern is woven on the loom with small wooden bobbins called kanis, one colour at a time, by weavers in Kashmir. It is not printed and not embroidered; turn the shawl over and you will see the pattern worked through the cloth.

Care

Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
