About this piece

A fine Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl woven in bold vertical stripes of saffron orange and deep plum, the two colours meeting along a stepped, zigzag edge. Down each stripe runs a chain of tiny motifs: little paisleys, tulip buds and diamond flowers in ivory, rose, slate blue, lilac and black. A narrow paisley edging runs along both sides, and at each end the motifs stop and the stripes carry on plain, finishing in a soft fringe.

The design

Striped shawls with running motifs are one of the oldest Kashmiri patterns, and this one is full of life: from a distance it reads as a warm saffron-and-plum stripe, and up close every line turns out to be a little procession of paisleys and buds. The stepped edges between the stripes give the weave a lovely texture where the colours meet.

How it is made

The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into fine Kashmiri pashmina, colour by colour, using the Kani technique. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes visible behind each motif. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.

The colour

Saffron and plum is a warm, festive pairing that glows in winter light. It is a bright, happy choice for a mehndi, a dholki or any winter celebration, and sits beautifully over black, ivory, plum, mustard or deep green.

Details

One piece only. Slight irregularity in the weave is natural to woven work of this kind, not a fault.

Ships in Attan's branded box with a thank-you card, ready to gift.

Size & how to wear

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.

Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.

Material & origin

Pashmina, Kani-woven. The pattern is woven on the loom with small wooden bobbins called kanis, one colour at a time, by weavers in Kashmir. It is not printed and not embroidered; turn the shawl over and you will see the pattern worked through the cloth.

Care

Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
