About this piece
A zari Kani pashmina shawl on an ivory ground, its field laid out as a fine lattice of curving vines. Inside each opening sits a tall leaf palmette or a small flowering plant, woven in maroon, cocoa, sage and soft grey, with tiny flecks of zari catching the light between them. A maroon border of paisleys and cream rosettes frames all four sides, and the ends finish in clean stripes of ivory, maroon, plum and powder blue.
The design
This is a jaal layout, the lattice that has framed Kashmiri shawl patterns for centuries. The repeat is close and even, so from a distance the shawl reads as a soft ivory-and-maroon texture, and up close it opens into leaves, buds and flowering stems. The deep maroon border gives the pale field a firm edge.
How it is made
The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into the pashmina, colour by colour, with the zari carried through the weave alongside the coloured threads. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes and zari floats visible. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.
The colour
Ivory and maroon is a warm, classic pairing that never looks loud. It suits daytime and evening alike, and sits well over maroon, black, brown, grey or ivory. It is a quiet choice for a winter wedding guest and an easy one for every day.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Pashmina with zari. Kani-woven in Kashmir with metallic zari thread carried through the pattern, which is why the surface catches the light at weddings and evening events.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Keep perfume away from the zari, and never press the zari directly.
