About this piece
A zari Kani pashmina shawl in black, with a field of leaves, vines and small paisleys woven tone on tone in charcoal grey, so the pattern shows up softly as the light moves across it. Over this sit rows of tall teal boteh, each one flecked with gold zari and finished with a small flower at its tip. A teal and gold floral vine runs down both long sides, and each end carries a deep palla of arched panels, alternating teal and slate grey, each holding a single boteh, before finishing in fine stripes of teal, grey and black.
The design
The boteh, the paisley shape that started on Kashmiri shawls, is the oldest motif in this kind of weaving. Here it is used two ways: scattered across the field as single teal drops, and lined up in the palla like a row of arched windows. The quiet grey jaal underneath keeps the black from feeling flat without competing with the teal.
How it is made
The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into the pashmina, colour by colour, with the zari carried through the weave alongside the coloured threads. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes and zari floats visible. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.
The colour
Black and teal is a deep, cool pairing, lifted by just enough gold to catch the light. It is understated enough for everyday winter wear and still dressy enough for an evening event or a winter wedding. It sits well over black, ivory, grey, navy or deep green.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Pashmina with zari. Kani-woven in Kashmir with metallic zari thread carried through the pattern, which is why the surface catches the light at weddings and evening events.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Keep perfume away from the zari, and never press the zari directly.
