Block-printed, then embroidered by hand
The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.
The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line, here in teal, blue, sage and ochre. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.
A different border from our other rust
We carry rust in two embroideries. The first is deliberately quiet — a single fine line at the edge and one small paisley buta in the corner, for someone who wants the colour to do the work. This piece is the opposite decision. The border is a full band of flowering vine, leaf buds and small blossoms closed top and bottom by a scalloped line, and the corner carries a large paisley with sprays of flowers opening around it rather than a single small motif.
The difference is hours, not design. A single line is one pass; a band this deep means the vine has to keep its rhythm across the width as well as the length, and the corner has to turn without the pattern bunching or thinning. If you have seen our narrow rust and wanted more from it, this is that shawl.
The colour
Rust is the shade that sits between brown and red without being either, which makes it easier to wear than it looks — good over cream, camel, olive and every neutral, and one of the few strong colours that suits both men and women.
The embroidery goes cool against it: teal, blue and sage rather than the gold you might expect. A warm thread on a warm ground disappears; the teal lifts cleanly off the rust and keeps the border readable from across a room. The ground itself is woven with a fine self-coloured lattice, visible when the light crosses it, so the cloth has texture of its own before any thread goes on.
