About this piece
A Swati Shahtoosh shawl in deep mustard, embroidered by hand across the entire field — long curling paisleys and trailing vine drawn in a fine dark thread, with small flower heads picked out in rose, teal and green, and a border of triangular blooms running round all four sides.
Block-printed, then embroidered by hand
The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.
The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.
Full embroidery, and what it costs
This is the reason this piece sits above our bordered Shahtoosh shawls. A bordered shawl is embroidered at the edges and left plain in the middle; this one has no plain ground at all — the vine runs the full length of the shawl and has to keep its rhythm the whole way.
The drawing here is deliberately fine and close to the ground colour, so the work reads as texture rather than pattern. From a distance the shawl is simply a strong, clean mustard; up close the whole field turns into line. It is the quieter way to wear full embroidery, and it goes with black, white, olive and brown without competing with any of them.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Swati Shahtoosh is a name, not a fibre. It is what the weavers of Salampur, Swat, call the finest, softest shawl on their looms. It contains no antelope fibre. The yarn is fine Australian wool, spun in China, handwoven one shawl at a time on the handlooms of Salampur, and then hand-embroidered in Multan. Read the full story in the Journal.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Keep perfume and hand cream away from the embroidered areas.
