Swati Shahtoosh Shawl — Charcoal Grey, Hand Embroidered
A Swati Shahtoosh shawl in deep charcoal grey, handwoven with a fine self-coloured lattice through the ground, then hand embroidered with a narrow flowering border running all four sides and a single large paisley buta set into one corner.
Block-printed, then embroidered by hand
The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.
The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line, in rust, rose, gold and slate. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.
There is not much embroidery here, and that restraint is the design: a thin line around the edge, one buta in the corner, nothing in the field at all. On a dark shawl this is the harder choice — with so little of it, every stitch has to be right, because there is nothing to distract from it.
The ground itself carries a fine self-coloured lattice, visible only when the light moves across it. It gives a plain dark shawl something to look at without adding a single extra colour.
Charcoal grey with a warm-toned border is the most wearable combination we stock at this price. It suits men and women equally, works over both formal and everyday dress, and is the shawl to reach for when you want the work noticed only by someone standing close.
