About this piece
A Swati Shahtoosh shawl in brown, handwoven in Salampur, Swat, and finished with a hand-embroidered border along its length.
The name, honestly
Swati Shahtoosh is the name the weavers of Salampur gave to the finest, softest shawl on their looms. It contains no antelope fibre. The yarn is fine Australian wool, spun in China, handwoven one shawl at a time on the handlooms of Salampur, Swat, and then hand-embroidered in Multan. It is light enough to carry through a whole winter day and warm enough to matter in the evening, which is why it is the shawl our customers come back to. Read the full story behind the name.
Classic border embroidery
A hand-embroidered border runs along the length of the shawl, worked in fine thread so it lies flat against the cloth rather than stiffening it. This is the design most of our customers choose for daily wear: enough detail to be noticed, not so much that it competes with what you are wearing underneath.
The colour
A mid brown that works over almost everything in a winter wardrobe: camel, black, cream, denim. It is the kind of shawl that gets worn three days a week without anyone noticing it is the same one.
Details
- Fine Australian wool, handwoven on the handlooms of Salampur, Swat
- Hand-embroidered border
- Approx. 40" × 80"
- Dry clean, or hand wash gently in cold water with a mild wool wash
- Woven in Swat · Hand-embroidered in Multan
Handwoven cloth varies slightly from piece to piece; small irregularities in the weave and stitching are the signature of hand work, not a fault. Colours may differ slightly from the photographs depending on your screen.
Ships in Attan's branded box with a thank-you card, ready to gift.
Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Swati Shahtoosh is a name, not a fibre. It is what the weavers of Salampur, Swat, call the finest, softest shawl on their looms. It contains no antelope fibre. The yarn is fine Australian wool, spun in China, handwoven one shawl at a time on the handlooms of Salampur, and then hand-embroidered in Multan. Read the full story in the Journal.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Keep perfume and hand cream away from the embroidered areas.
