Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl - Sand & Indigo

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a soft sand ground, handwoven with dense indigo and chestnut paisley across the field and a deep ornamented border at each end.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

This is the most classical of our Kani pieces: the small repeating buta across the field and the large curling paisleys in the border follow the pattern language of nineteenth-century Kashmir shawls almost exactly. The muted sand, indigo and chestnut palette means it goes with nearly everything — the sort of shawl that gets worn rather than saved.
