Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl — Rose & Oyster

Rs.18,000.00

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a pale oyster ground, handwoven with rose, terracotta and plum flowering vines across the field, a deep scalloped medallion border and a striped paisley end panel.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

The border is what sets this one apart. Most Kani shawls end in a straight band; this one is finished with a row of scalloped arches, each holding a full medallion, above a striped panel of small paisleys. Curved edges are considerably harder to weave than straight ones — the pattern script has to account for the curve line by line — and a weaver only attempts it on a piece worth the extra weeks.
