A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a warm camel ground, handwoven with a trellis of flowering vines in verdigris green and rust, framed by a fine scrolling border on all four sides and closed at each end with a striped panel and a soft fringe.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

Verdigris — the soft blue-green of aged copper — is the difficult colour here, and the reason to look twice. Against warm camel it should clash; instead the two settle into each other, because the green has been dulled just enough to stop it competing. That is a dyeing decision as much as a weaving one, and it is what gives the whole shawl its faded, long-owned quality straight off the loom.

The pattern is continuous rather than framed — vines run edge to edge with no open ground and no dominant motif — so the piece reads as texture from a distance and only resolves into flowers up close. It is the least ceremonial Kani in the collection, and the one that suits a man as readily as a woman.
