About this piece
An everyday Swati pashmina shawl in rich red, handwoven in Salampur, Swat, and hand-embroidered across the whole field. It is the affordable way to own a fully embroidered shawl: the same style of needlework as our Swati Shahtoosh, on a lighter everyday wool base.
Where it sits in the range
Our Swati Shahtoosh is woven from fine Australian wool and is the softer, finer cloth. The everyday Swati pashmina is a sturdier, more affordable wool weave from the same Salampur looms, which lets us put a week of hand-embroidery on it and still keep the price where a first embroidered shawl should be. If you want the finest hand, choose the Swati Shahtoosh; if you want the embroidery and the colour for everyday wear and gifting, this is the piece.
A note on the word pashmina
"Swati pashmina" is the Salampur weavers' own name for their softest everyday wool weave. It is a wool shawl, not the goat-fibre pashmina of Kashmir, and we price it as one. Swati vs Kashmiri shawls, explained.
The colour
A brighter, clearer red than our deep red: the colour of a mehndi evening, made to be seen across a room. Read our guide to choosing a wedding shawl.
Details
- Soft wool, handwoven in Salampur, Swat
- Hand-embroidered across the full field
- Approx. 40" × 80"
- Dry clean, or hand wash gently in cold water with a mild wool wash
- Woven and embroidered by hand
Handwoven cloth varies slightly from piece to piece; small irregularities in the weave and stitching are the signature of hand work, not a fault. Colours may differ slightly from the photographs depending on your screen.
Ships in Attan's branded packaging.
Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Swati pashmina wool. "Swati pashmina" is the Salampur weavers' name for their softest everyday wool weave. Handwoven on the khaddi handloom in Salampur, Swat.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Keep perfume and hand cream away from the embroidered areas.
