The ring test is in the photos above: a genuine Palladar passes whole through a finger ring, and this is one of ours.
A fine Kashmiri pashmina ring shawl (Palladar) in warm taupe, woven jamawar — patterned across the entire cloth rather than only at the ends. A dense silver flowering vine fills the whole field, scattered through with small paisley butis picked out in red, black and green; a wide silver border of interlocking cartouches runs down all four sides, and each end closes with broad bands of ikat-feathered stripe in green, coral, crimson and silver.
Ring test note: This is the same ultra-fine pashmina as our plain ring shawls, and it does pass through a ring — but draw it through slowly and with care. Being ek rukh (patterned on one face), it has loose threads across the back of the cloth where each colour turns, and those can catch if the shawl is pulled quickly. We would rather tell you that than let you find out.
The name comes from the test. A Palladar is a shawl fine enough to be drawn whole through a finger ring — the traditional proof of fine Kashmiri pashmina. Yarn this fine breaks if the loom is pushed, so the weaving is slow and careful.
Jamawar — patterned end to end
There is no plain cloth on this shawl. A bordered piece carries its work at the two ends and leaves the field empty; a jamawar carries pattern across every inch, so the loom never gets an easy passage and the piece takes considerably longer than a bordered one of the same size.
The scattered butis
What separates this from our silver grey jamawar is what happens on top of the field. The silver vine is one layer; the small coloured paisleys are a second, dropped across it in a strict diagonal rhythm. Both repeats have to stay in register at the same time, and any drift shows immediately because there is nowhere to hide it.
The result is a shawl that reads as a quiet neutral from a distance and as three separate designs up close.
Ek Rukh — woven on one face
Kashmiri weavers distinguish between do-rukha, worked so the pattern reads on both faces of the cloth, and ek rukh — one face. On a full-coverage Palladar, working one face is what keeps the cloth light enough to pass the ring; the loose threads on the reverse are the visible record of that weave, not a fault.

Handwoven cloth varies very slightly along its length; any faint unevenness you can see against the light is the mark of the handloom, not a fault.

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Ek Rukh (single-sided) pieces carry their pattern on one face, with the pattern threads lying loose on the back. They are the same material as our plain ring shawls but should be passed through a ring slowly and with care so the back threads are not pulled.
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
