About this piece
A Kani pashmina shawl on a deep mustard ground, handwoven in Kashmir with a complete Mughal court procession — caparisoned elephants carrying howdahs, horsemen in patterned robes, attendants raising parasols and morchals, and behind them the pavilions, arcades and cypress gardens of a palace — all worked in gold zari with coloured detail, and framed by a border of standing figures that runs the entire perimeter. The reverse is protected with a plain pashmina backing.
The technique
Kani is one of Kashmir's traditional shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis, following a coded pattern script called a talim.
On an ordinary Kani shawl the motifs repeat, and a weaver settles into the rhythm of a paisley or a flowering vine. A figural scene like this one is far less repetitive: elephants, riders, parasol-bearers and the arches of the pavilions behind them, each drawn into the design. Figural court scenes are among the most ambitious designs in the Kashmiri shawl tradition, and historic examples sit in museum collections.
The zari
Running through the whole design is metallic zari thread. It behaves nothing like wool: stiffer, less forgiving, and it will not lie flat unless the tension is right. Carried across a field this dense, it is demanding work. Here it does what it should: the gold lifts the whole cloth under light without hardening the drape. Against mustard rather than a pale ground, the metal reads as part of the colour rather than an addition to it.
The protected reverse
Fold this shawl back and you will find a second layer — a plain mustard pashmina backing stitched across the worked panels. This is not padding and it is not there to hide anything. On a piece carrying this much zari and this many colour changes, the reverse holds many thread ends and floats; left exposed they catch on jewellery, buttons and rings, and a single pulled thread can damage the face of the weave. The backing takes that risk away.
What to look for
Spend time with the field and the scene resolves: a rider turning back toward the elephant behind him, a canopy held over a figure who is clearly the reason for the procession, musicians at the edge of the border. The border figures are small and still individually dressed. This is a piece that rewards close looking over years, which is the point of an heirloom rather than an occasion purchase.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Keep perfume away from the zari, and never press the zari directly.
