A Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a warm mustard-yellow ground, covered all over in a trailing garden of slender vines, small flowers, serrated leaves, little paisleys and clusters of berries, woven in turquoise, poppy red, charcoal, blush and plum. A narrow border of tiny flowers and twisting ribbon runs around the field, with a fine paisley edging on the long sides, and each end finishes in a row of small hanging leaf motifs over bold stripes of red, turquoise, charcoal and cream, with a soft fringe.
The design
This is an all-over garden jaal: the whole field is filled with flowering stems that seem to grow and tumble across the cloth, with no central medallion or plain space. The mustard ground keeps it bright and sunny, and the turquoise and red pick out the leaves and flowers so the pattern reads clearly even from a distance.
How it is made
The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into Kashmiri pashmina, colour by colour, using the Kani technique. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes visible behind every flower. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.
The colour
Mustard yellow is a natural pick for a mayun or mehndi, and warm and cheerful for everyday winter wear. It sits beautifully over black, ivory, olive, teal, maroon or deep green.
