About this piece
A Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl in the jamawar style, handwoven in Kashmir with the pattern carried across the whole field of the cloth.
What Kani means
Kani is one of Kashmir's traditional shawl techniques. The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth; it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis, each wound with a different shade, following a written pattern called the talim. Kani vs sozni, explained.
Jamawar
Jamawar means the pattern covers the field edge to edge rather than sitting only in the borders and end panels, so there is no plain ground to weave quickly: every part of the shawl is pattern.
The base
Woven on a Kashmiri pashmina base, softer and finer than our Everyday Kani, which is the reason for the difference in price. How we test pashmina.

Size & how to wear
Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Material & origin
Pashmina, Kani-woven. The pattern is woven on the loom with small wooden bobbins called kanis, one colour at a time, by weavers in Kashmir. It is not printed and not embroidered; turn the shawl over and you will see the pattern worked through the cloth.
Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
