The ring test. A genuine Palladar passes whole through a finger ring; this is one of ours.
About this piece

A fine Kashmiri pashmina ring shawl (Palladar) in dark charcoal grey, its field woven with a lattice of black paisley medallions on a ground of tiny flowers, and finished at both ends with a palla of large paisleys in teal, crimson, saffron and sage.

The name comes from the test. A Palladar is a shawl fine enough to be drawn whole through a finger ring — the traditional proof of fine Kashmiri pashmina. Yarn this fine breaks if the loom is pushed, so the weaving is slow and careful, and there is no shortcut to a cloth that passes. The ring is simply the proof.

The pallas

Each end carries a row of five tall paisleys on an olive-brown ground of flowering sprigs, each paisley outlined in a different colour — turquoise, crimson, saffron, lilac — and framed by a sage border of small paisleys. The colour is all woven in, not printed or stitched, so the pattern reads on both sides. The two ends are coloured differently: one in the full jewel palette, the other bordered in deep red and orange, so you can choose which end to bring forward.

Over the shoulders the field stays dark and quiet — black paisley medallions in a neat lattice on the charcoal ground, visible up close — so all the colour falls to the front when the shawl is draped.

The colour

Dark charcoal reads almost black indoors and shows its grey in daylight, which keeps the black medallions visible where a true black ground would swallow them. Against it, the teal and crimson in the pallas look rich without being loud. It is one of the most dressed-up Palladars in the range and easy to wear to a wedding or an evening.

Details

  • Ultra-fine Kashmiri pashmina
  • Dark charcoal field with a woven black paisley-medallion lattice and small floral ground
  • Woven pallas at both ends: five large paisleys in teal, crimson, saffron and lilac on an olive-brown ground, within a paisley-chain border; the two ends coloured differently
  • Plain charcoal end strip with fringe
  • Passes through a finger ring
  • Approx. 40" × 80"
  • Dry clean only — store folded and away from direct light
  • Handwoven in Kashmir

Handwoven cloth varies very slightly along its length; any faint unevenness you can see against the light is the mark of the handloom, not a fault.

Ships in Attan's branded box with a thank-you card, ready to gift.

Size & how to wear

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.

Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.

Material & origin

Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.

Care

Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
