A fine Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl in red, handwoven in Kashmir with a floral pattern worked across the cloth. What sets this piece apart is the hand: the pashmina base is exceptionally soft and fine, so light that it slips through your fingers, close in feel to our ring shawls.
What Kani means
Kani is one of Kashmir's traditional shawl techniques. The weaver works with small wooden bobbins, called kanis, each wound with a different colour, and builds the design into the cloth following a written pattern. Nothing is printed and nothing is stitched on; the motif is the cloth. Read how Kani differs from sozni embroidery.
The feel
Fine pashmina is warm without weight. This shawl drapes rather than sits on the shoulders, and it folds small enough to carry in a handbag for evenings out. Only one piece is available in this colour.
The colour
Red is the wedding-season Kani. It is the colour guests reach for at a mehndi or a walima, and the one most often bought as a gift for a bride's trousseau. Worn over a plain outfit it does all the work on its own.
Details
Handwoven cloth varies slightly from piece to piece; small irregularities are the signature of hand work, not a fault. Colours may differ slightly from the photographs depending on your screen.

Size: approximately 40″ × 80″ (100 × 200 cm). One size, unstitched, with the natural fringe left as the loom made it.
Long enough to wrap twice, drape over one shoulder, or wear open over a formal outfit. Every piece is finished by hand, so measurements can vary by an inch or so.
Fine Kashmiri pashmina. Handwoven in Kashmir, and fine enough that the finished shawl passes whole through a finger ring. Nothing is printed; every pattern is woven in.
Dry clean only. Between wears, air the shawl flat in shade for an hour; never hang it by one corner. Store folded in the box it came in, or in a cotton bag with a cedar block. Do not iron directly; if it creases, steam it through a cotton cloth. Put perfume on before the shawl, never onto it.
