A fine Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a deep black ground, filled with neat rows of small paisley buta, each one a tiny bouquet of flowers in turquoise, saffron, rose, plum and cream. The field is framed on three sides by a bold border of large interlocking paisleys and arched cones in turquoise, mustard, crimson and lilac, studded with rows of little round beads and flowers. A fine chevron edging runs along the outer sides, and the ends finish in a row of bright pointed blocks in red, green, orange, blue, yellow and violet, with a soft fringe.
The design
This is a classic Kashmiri buta-and-palla layout: a calm, evenly spaced field of small paisleys, with all the drama saved for the border. The big arched cones climb up the sides and across the ends like a row of carved windows, so the shawl looks just as striking draped over the shoulder as it does laid flat.
How it is made
The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into fine Kashmiri pashmina, colour by colour, using the Kani technique. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes visible behind each motif. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.
The colour
Black with turquoise, mustard and crimson is a true jewel-box palette: rich and festive, but grounded by the black so it never looks loud. It works over black, ivory, grey, teal, mustard or maroon, and is as much at home at a winter wedding as on an ordinary evening out.
