A fine Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a soft black ground, scattered with rows of small flower buti in magenta, rose, coral and saffron, each one a tiny bouquet with a bright centre. Around the field climbs a trailing border of large blooms and feathery leaves in fuchsia, plum, peach and touches of slate blue, and at the two inner corners of each end sits a big paisley in rose and old gold. A narrow paisley edging runs along both selvedges, and the ends are left plain black with a soft fringed finish.
The design
The layout is classic and generous: an open field of evenly spaced buti, framed on three sides by a flowering vine that thickens into the corners. The black ground is left to breathe between the motifs, so every flower reads clearly, and the large corner paisleys anchor the design where the shawl falls over the shoulder.
How it is made
The pattern is not printed or embroidered onto the cloth. It is woven into fine Kashmiri pashmina, colour by colour, using the Kani technique. Turn the shawl over and you will see the reverse of the weave, with the thread changes visible behind each motif. That is the honest back of a woven pattern, not a fault.
The colour
Black with magenta and rose is rich without being heavy, a palette that feels festive in the evening and still easy enough for everyday winter. It sits beautifully over black, ivory, grey, plum or any shade of pink.
