Fine Indian Pashmina Shawl — Marigold Jamawar

A finely handwoven Indian pashmina shawl on a marigold ground, covered edge to edge in a lattice of flowering medallions worked in teal, rose, violet, green and rust, framed by a narrow figured border and closed at each end with a band of vertical stripes beneath a row of arches.

This is the finest pashmina in the collection after our ring shawls. The yarn is spun thin enough that the cloth reads almost like silk in the hand, and the pattern is woven through rather than applied — hold it to the light and the design is legible from both sides.

What makes this piece unusual is that there is no ground left. On most shawls the pattern sits on a field of colour; here the design fills every inch, and the marigold shows only in the thin channels between motifs. It is the hardest kind of weaving to plan, because with nothing left empty there is no margin — every colour has to be carried the full width and every repeat has to meet the last one exactly.

The effect is closer to a carpet than to cloth, and it is the reason this pattern language is what people picture when they picture a Kashmir shawl. Worn, the density reads as one warm gold from a distance and resolves into ten colours up close.
