Swati Shahtoosh Shawl — Black with Saffron Border, Hand Embroidered

Rs.12,500.00

A Swati Shahtoosh shawl in deep black, left plain across the whole field and framed on all four sides by a narrow hand-embroidered border in saffron, coral, gold and pale blue, with a single paisley buta worked into each corner.

Block-printed, then embroidered by hand

The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.

The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.

A narrow border, and why that is harder

Most embroidered shawls hide their errors in density. This one has nowhere to hide: a single fine line of stitching running the full perimeter, on black, where every wobble would show. Holding that line straight for four sides and bringing it round each corner cleanly is the whole test of the piece — and the corner paisleys are the embroiderer's flourish once it is done.

It is also the most wearable thing we make in this range. A plain black shawl with one warm line at the edge goes with everything, day or evening, and does not compete with what you are wearing under it.
