Pure Kashmiri Pashmina Kani Shawl — Almond & Cornflower

A pure Kashmiri pashmina Kani shawl on a pale almond ground, handwoven with cornflower blue, rose, olive and violet flowering vines across the field, a deep scalloped medallion border and a striped paisley end panel.

Kani is the oldest and slowest of Kashmir's shawl techniques. The pattern isn't printed or embroidered onto the cloth — it is built into the weave itself, colour by colour, using small wooden bobbins called kanis. The weaver follows a coded pattern script and may complete only an inch or two in a day, which is why a piece like this is measured in months of work rather than hours.

The blue is what makes this one unusual. Kani is almost always worked in the warm half of the palette — reds, rusts, golds — and cornflower against an almond ground pulls the whole piece cool instead. It suits denim and grey as readily as it does formal dress, which is not something most Kani shawls can claim, and it makes this the easiest piece in the collection to wear on an ordinary day.
