swati-shahtoosh-shawl-white-fully-hand-embroidered
Swati Shahtoosh Shawl — White, Fully Hand Embroidered

A Swati Shahtoosh shawl in soft white, embroidered by hand across the entire field — a continuous trellis of curling paisleys and flowering vine worked in fine thread, in muted rose, teal, gold, olive and plum, and framed on all four sides by a band of triangular flower heads.

Block-printed, then embroidered by hand

The design does not go straight onto the cloth. It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every vine, leaf and petal the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.

The embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the placement is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.

Full embroidery, and what it costs

This is the reason this piece sits above our bordered Shahtoosh shawls. A bordered shawl is embroidered at the edges and left plain in the middle; this one has no plain ground at all. The needle has covered every part of the cloth, and the paisley repeat has to hold its rhythm across the full length — on a pale ground, where a dropped line or a crooked stem has nowhere to hide.

The colours are deliberately quiet. Held at arm's length the shawl reads as plain white with a faint wash of colour through it; up close the whole field resolves into drawing. That restraint is harder to pull off than a bright thread and is what makes it wearable in daylight rather than only at a wedding.

Details

Swati Shahtoosh — woven in Swat, KPK

Hand embroidered across the entire field, with a bordered edge on all four sides

Design block-printed first, then embroidered entirely by hand

Approx. 40" × 80"

Dry clean only — pale grounds mark easily, so store folded and away from direct light

Each shawl is embroidered by hand, so slight variation between pieces is expected and is the mark of hand work rather than a fault.

Ships in Attan's branded box with a thank-you card, ready to gift.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0919/4458/3462/files/96135a20-e9d7-43e9-a019-2a1bb00649da.jpg?v=1789494179
