It is first printed on with carved wooden blocks — an outline in washable ink that maps every line the embroiderer will follow. The blocks themselves are cut by a separate craftsman and a workshop may use the same set for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe embroiderer then works the whole design by hand over that printed line. The ink washes out at the end, leaving only thread. It is worth understanding what this does and does not mean: the block guarantees the \u003cem\u003eplacement\u003c\/em\u003e is even and the borders match corner to corner, but every stitch, every colour change and all the shading is still done by hand, one needle at a time. A printed shawl would be finished at the printing stage. This one is where the work begins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGeometric, where our other rust is floral\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe carry rust in more than one embroidery, and the difference here is the design language rather than the size. Our other wide-border rust is floral — a running vine of leaf buds and blossoms with a large flowering paisley in the corner. This border is \u003cem\u003ejali\u003c\/em\u003e work: a trellis of diamonds, each cell holding a small star, with leaf-shaped eyes set along the rows in blue, teal, gold and rose, and a scalloped line closing it on the inside. The paisley is small and lifted onto the open field rather than built into the corner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGeometry is the harder thing to embroider by hand. A vine forgives a wandering stitch because no two leaves are meant to match; a diamond grid does not — every cell has to be the same size and every row square across the full width, and the eye catches any cell that drifts. This is quieter than the floral border from across a room and more interesting up close, which is the trade you are making between the two.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe colour\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRust is the shade that sits between brown and red without being either, which makes it easier to wear than it looks — good over cream, camel, olive and every neutral, and one of the few strong colours that suits both men and women.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe thread here stays close to the ground in tone and lets the small blues and teals do the lifting, so the border reads as texture at a distance and resolves into pattern when you are near it.
