A Palladar is a shawl fine enough to be drawn whole through a finger ring — and that is only possible when the pashmina has been hand-spun on a charkha to a thread so fine it is barely visible against the light. Spinners who do this work have often done nothing else for decades. The weaving that follows is just as slow, because yarn this fine breaks if the loom is pushed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eA plain ground and one band\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eEverything on this shawl is at the ends. There is no self-pattern in the field — the black is left completely plain, and all the work goes into one band. That is the older and harder discipline: with nothing else to look at, the band has to hold the whole piece, so the drawing is finer and the colour count higher than on a shawl where a patterned ground carries some of the weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe olive ground is the unusual choice, and the right one. On black, an olive band with red and turquoise in it reads like an old carpet rather than like modern brocade — warm, slightly faded, nothing shining.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eEk Rukh — woven on one face\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eKashmiri weavers distinguish between \u003cem\u003edo-rukha\u003c\/em\u003e, worked so the pattern reads on both faces of the cloth, and \u003cem\u003eek rukh\u003c\/em\u003e — one face. This shawl is ek rukh, and on a Palladar that is the correct choice rather than the lesser one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003ePatterning both faces at this density would have doubled the weight of the band and ended the ring test for good. Working one face keeps the cloth light enough to remain a true Palladar while still carrying a full colour design — you get the ornament and the fineness together, which a do-rukha piece at this scale cannot give you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe ring test, and the one honest difference\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe base cloth is exactly the same ultra-fine pashmina as our plain ring shawls. There is only one difference between the two, and it is on the reverse: a plain ring shawl has a clean back with nothing to snag, and this one has loose threads across the back of the band where each colour turns at the end of its run. Those threads are the whole reason the front carries a design in full colour, and they are also the only thing that can catch. So yes, it passes through a ring — draw it slowly and let the band feed.
